The Lost Caravan by Marshall Riggan is a simultaneously heart-breaking and heart-warming story of Paul and his 3 old friends who have got tired of their monotonous lives and want to feel the thrill of an adventure like the old times. They stumble upon a legend of a camel caravan that slipped into nothingness in 180 AD somewhere in the empty quarter of Arabian peninsula and was never found again. The old folks (but don’t doubt their strength and conviction even for a second) make a crazy plan to arrange an expedition which is full of uncertainty, fatigue and danger.
This book is not just a story of a fantastic adventure but also a collection of carefully gathered information about geography, history, warfare and politics of all the places Paul and his companions visit. The lessons are merged in the story in such a way that they do not feel imposed or intellectually overwhelming.
The plot of the story is perfectly structured and each event unfolds so smoothly and sometimes so unexpectedly that everything starts to make sense. The suspense, thrill and cliffhangers add extra appeal to an already immersive story. The scenes are depicted with such detail that I felt as if I was traveling along with Paul and company. The imagery is so vivid and rich in substance that it can help even a non-imaginative mind to see and feel what the characters see and feel. The poetic language and profound metaphors amplified the depth of the story which made me appreciate it even more.
I’ve given this book 4 out of 5 stars because there are a few errors like spelling mistakes which aren’t confusing but editing should’ve been paid more attention to.
I’d recommend this book to anybody who is interested in adventure stories full of thrill, trust and love. I would say that if you haven’t cried in a while, read this book. If you haven’t smiled in a while, read this book. If your heart hasn’t skipped a beat in a while, read this book.
